I have been fascinated by natural secrets to eternal youthfulness from a young age. I remember reading in a teen magazine that if you went out and washed your face in the early morning dew, you could stay young-looking. This really captured my imagination and though I never really made a practice of creeping outside to the lawn at dawn, it sparked a curiosity.

I was equally captivated when I first discovered the secrets of the powerfully regenerative helichrysum italicum plant. This highly fragrant shrub has a rich, herbaceous, honey-like bouquet and produces an essential oil known as everlasting, or immortelle in French, because of its long-revered association with maintaining youthfulness. Indeed, the plant features way back in Homer’s The Odyssey as an ‘elixir of youth.’

The unparalleled skin regenerative and protective benefits of Helichrysum italicum essential oil stem from the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-microbial, anti-fungal and antioxidant properties arising from its rare and unique chemical composition. It’s healing profile is then amplified by the presence of a hero molecule called neryl acetate that targets the very heart of the skin cells to combat metabolic and replicative cellular ageing as well as boosting the skin’s micro circulation and collagen production. My research lead me to discover, however, that there are many varieties of helichrysum and that not all varieties are created equal. The soil composition and climate of this Mediterranean island contribute to the plant’s overall chemical profile, but in particular, the high percentage of neryl acetate it yields (around 40% compared to 10 to 20% from other sources).
